Great Crested Newt Population and Habitat Suitability Monitoring Protocol

The aim of this protocol is to give a guidance for measuring the habitat suitability of ponds for Great Crested Newts in particular for the reserve 'Woodhouse Washlands'.
It is meant to work alongside newt population surveys from March until end of June.
A further goal is to identify specific habitat management priorities to strenghten the area as a potential hotspot for Great Crested Newt populations. A total 9 of 14 ponds (2;3;4;5;6;;11;12;13;14) have to be surveyed at Woodhouse Washlands (see map attached).

Breeding Skylark Monitoring Protocol

This protocol is designed to establish the number of skylark males holding territory during the breeding season at Woodhouse Washlands Nature Reserve. This will enable SRWT to make an educated assumption of breeding pairs of Skylark at the reserve.

Sward height measurements are also taken within compartment B4 to ascertain if optimal breeding conditions are being maintained.

Breeding Waders Monitoring Protocol

This protocol is designed to establish the number of Lapwing and Snipe males holding territory during the breeding season at our Nature Reserves. This will enable SRWT to make an educated assumption of breeding pairs of at the reserve.

We carry out breeding wader surveys for three sites: Hammond's Field, Woodhouse Washlands and Kilnhurst Ings.

This survey is carried out using standard methods derived from the BTOs Common Bird Census (CBC).
