These beautiful ancient woodlands are carpeted in bluebells, sweet woodruff and wood anemone in spring and early summer. Majestic beech and oak trees tower overhead in these beautiful ancient woodlands, while Dowey Lumb is a small meadow with scattered trees and scrub which is increasingly rich in wildflowers.
The aim of this protocol is to establish a baseline, and implement ongoing monitoring of Ancient Woodland Indicators (AWIs) at Moss Valley Nature Reserve. This method is not designed to compile a species list for the sites but will provide information on species richness and cover in order to assess trends for the chosen indicators.
This survey will be carried out using a technique known as Mackinnon Lists. This technique enables a rapid assessment of bird species richness over a large area, but is not designed to compile a full species list for a site, or assess population sizes.
The aim of this protocol is to establish a baseline, and implement ongoing monitoring of woodland condition on SRWT reserves. Woodland condition includes structural attributes of the woodland such as the amount of dead wood, presence of glades and or rides, or invasive species.
