Butterfly monitoring (HERB)

The aim of this survey is to measure the butterfly species richness at the HERB sites using a variation of the Pollard Walk transect method

  • ID/spotter sheet (if using)

Timing

Weekly between 1st April - 30th September

Method

•    Takes place between 1st April – 30th September
•    Takes place weekly (or as often as possible in long periods of bad weather)
•    Time: between 10:00 and 17:00, though butterfly activity may drop off rapidly during the late afternoon so later times should be avoided
•    Weather: warm (minimum 13°c) and at least bright weather, with no more than moderate winds and not when it is raining
•    Walk at a slow, steady pace counting all butterflies seen within 5m
•    Follow the transect route provided, and complete the full route
